2021 AA Seminar Program Reports Available

Two Alumni Association Seminars were awarded in FY20 and took place in 2021. Their reports are now available and can be found on the AA Seminar Program Awardee History page.

  • One Health, One World Day – Global One Health effects of low-level radiation on human health (Nov 3, 2021): Hosted by the Institute for Global Health at Michigan State University, this first annual symposium on the One Health method covered radiation’s effects on global health across countries including the US, Vietnam, Nicaragua, and Japan.

  • Arsenic: From the environment to medicine (Nov 9, 2021): Organized by Dr. Barry P. Rosen at Florida International University, the seminar discussed how investigation into arsenic contamination in rice led to the discovery of a new arsenic-containing antibiotic. The method has potential applications in cancer treatment and was extensively discussed between researchers from Japan and Florida.

Congratulations to the seminar organizers for pulling off these events under challenging circumstances!

Applications for FY21 AA Seminars have closed. We will share an update when FY22 applications open, and look forward to your submissions at that time.

JSPS Washington Office has officially announced the 2022 BRIDGE Fellowship

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) provides opportunities for overseas researchers who have conducted research activities under JSPS International Fellowships for Research in Japan or other JSPS programs to come back to Japan to create, sustain and/or strengthen research collaborations with Japanese colleagues. The objective is to build strong networks among researchers in Japan and other countries through a variety of activities. These include former JSPS fellows visiting their past host institutions in Japan, or coming to Japan to plan or implement joint research projects and seminars, to offer training or lectures for young researchers, or to prepare or attend scientific conferences and research meetings.

The 2022 BRIDGE Fellowship application deadline is January 16, 2022. Eligibility for this program is provided exclusively for the regular members of the US-Canada JSPS Alumni Association1 and who have experienced research in Japan under a JSPS program. (1 Persons who have been funded and/or awarded by JSPS and currently residing or have an affiliation with a research organization in the U.S. or Canada are eligible for regular membership; see Article 4, Membership Section 2 of the Bylaws.)

For full BRIDGE Fellowship details, including how to apply, please visit the BRIDGE Fellowship Overview page for information and applicable forms.

FY 2021 BRIDGE Fellowship program cancelled

We regret to inform that the recruitment for the BRIDGE Fellowship Program has been cancelled for FY2021 due to restrictions placed on entering Japan in connection with the new coronavirus pandemic. We are scheduled to restart recruitments in the next fiscal year (FY2022).

Please visit this webpage in the future for updates and other news.

Updated bylaws in effect

Updated bylaws for the US and Canada JSPS Alumni Association have been posted on the association’s web site. The name of the Alumni Association was changed because many Canadian researchers already joined the Alumni Association and we would like to clearly show that we are accepting members from Canada. These updated bylaws are available on the Bylaws page.

In addition, the updated Bylaws explain how members of the Alumni Association can make a group called a “Chapter” which can hold events for the purpose of promoting activities of the Alumni Association. For full Chapter details, including on how to apply, please visit the Chapter page.
